The Miss Atlantic City had to be
transported from Hard Scrabble, DE to the Cupola Park boat ramp at the head
waters of the Indian River in Millsboro, DE for launching. The bridge was not
mounted for transportation to allow the boat to pass under power lines.
Launched as the MISTER IKE.
For the first year, the boat offered divers and
fishermen a bare bones boat. Both the bridge and cabin were open. The dive
ladder folded up and was stowed on deck when not in use. If you thought the
present ladder was a challenge to climb, you don't remember this version.
Benches that were used for dive preparation were not secured, so they tended to
slide about the deck. There was no radar and wrecks were located by Loran C and
a paper printout depth finder and it was powered by an 8V-71 Detroit Deisel with
a top speed of 12 knots.
